Reiki origins - Mikao Usui

Originating in the early 20th century, the Usui system of Reiki (Usui Shiki Ryoho) was discovered by Japanese scholar, Mikao Usui.  Reiki - ‘rei’ meaning universal and ‘ki’ energy – is based on the following spiritual principle: universal life force energy exists within us all. Historically, Reiki has been passed on from one master teacher to another through specific initiations (attunements), teachings and a defined form of practice.

'Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better'

How does Reiki heal?

Our body is more than its physical composition –
skin, bones, muscles, arteries and nerves, to name some aspects, form only part of the whole. A more subtle system, comprised of multiple energy bodies, surrounds our physical form.

Congested energy that exists within both the energetic and physical systems can manifest as emotional, mental or physical imbalance. Reiki addresses the holistic health of an individual helping to release energetic stagnation and stimulate the flow of energy in and around the body. It can promote a sense of well-being, facilitate the healing process and alleviate symptoms of illness.

Reiki can assist in:
Easing pain in the body
Encouraging healing
Encouraging spiritual growth
Fostering balance and harmony
Healing inflammation and infections
Improving sleep
Improving focus and clarity of the mind
Improving digestion
Promoting relaxation
Reducing anxiety
Reducing depression
Releasing energetic blocks –
emotional, mental, physical
Reducing stress
Strengthening the immune system
The Reiki precepts

The Reiki precepts, or codes of practice, form as the foundation of the Usui Shiki Ryoho system. Despite their formal collective term, the precepts are not a set of rules that must be adhered to. Instead, they are to be used as a guide to living in harmony with the self and others  - moreso, a gentle reminder of how to live in the present moment.

Mikao Usui taught his students to sit, morning and evening, in gassho (prayer – palms of the hands pressed together) and recite the following precepts:

Just for today…
Do not anger
Do not worry
Be grateful
Work hard
Be kind to others

Reiki lineages

A Reiki lineage can be likened to an energetic family tree. It is advisable to choose a Reiki Master teacher with an unbroken lineage – that is, a lineage detailing a list of all master teachers that can be directly traced back to the original founder. In the case of the Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki system - Mikao Usui. This ensures validity of the training you are receiving; the traditional teachings will have been preserved as much as possible.
